This spring, students from the Williamsville East High School French Honor Society turned their Valentine's Amour Craft and Bake Sale into an opportunity to make a difference beyond their own community. Under the leadership of French teacher and advisor Michèle Roberts, the group raised and donated $120 to support children living at GUAOA Orphanage in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Turning Generosity into Meals

The Williamsville East High School French Honor Society's donation provided approximately 60 meals for orphaned and vulnerable children at GUAOA Orphanage.

In eastern DRC, food insecurity remains a daily challenge. Ongoing conflict has disrupted access to farmland, increased food prices, and displaced countless families. More recently, communities have also faced concerns related to an Ebola outbreak in the region.

For children at GUAOA Orphanage, access to consistent, nutritious meals can make a significant difference in their health, education, and overall well-being. Thanks to the generosity of these students, dozens of children received meals that might not otherwise have been available.

A Connection Across Continents

For many of us, it's easy to forget how connected we are to communities around the world. Yet a group of students in Western New York demonstrated that compassion has no borders.

Their fundraiser may have taken place in a school hallway, but its impact reached children thousands of miles away.

By choosing to support ICA, these students helped remind the children of GUAOA that they are seen, valued, and supported by people who care.

Why Support Like This Matters

The timing of this gift was especially meaningful. After several years of support from a major meal funder, ICA is working to address a growing funding gap for food security programs at GUAOA Orphanage. As costs continue to rise and humanitarian challenges persist, every contribution helps ensure children have access to the basic necessities they need to thrive.

Donations like this one demonstrate how communities can come together to create real impact, regardless of age or geography.
